Resilience in policy and politics

The concept of resilience has attracted increasing scholarly and policy attention. Policy makers and advisors are keen to shore up the resilience of e.g. liberal institutions and policies against various threats. Noting this attention, the concept of ‘resilience’ has enjoyed a recent resurgence in scholarly circles, including in the interdisciplinary field of social networks (see Lazega et al. 2022). Yet political and policy resilience has seen less empirical work so far. With conceptual work breaking new ground, we are opening a call for papers for a special issue bringing political networks and social resilience closer together.

The aim of the special issue is to shed light on how social network analysis in general, and the study of political networks in particular, can contribute to defining resilience in socio-political systems, subsystems, and cases, as well as exploring how the concept of resilience can help us make sense of change and continuity in these systems. Work is required in both developing our conceptual, theoretical, and methodological toolkits as well as in demonstrating the applicability and utility across a wide range of political phenomena.

We welcome submissions of papers that combine network thinking and analysis with the concept of resilience in social or political systems. We invite scholars from diverse countries, backgrounds, and disciplines, and are interested in theoretical, empirical, and methodological work. We are particularly interested in policy studies, but also studies of politics, networks of interest groups, MPs or alike. We welcome studies as well in international relations, global, national, or regional governance.

Paper proposals to be submitted until June 10th to [email protected]
